Day 26-29 - Sorry I'm so far behind!

Hi friends!

As you can probably tell, I've been very busy the last few days and haven't been able to keep up with my daily diary.

Tomorrow is my big walk and I'm pumped up about it! I can't wait to meet other doggies and walk for a good cause.

Thank you all for your generous donations. They are most appreciated. If you haven't donated but would like to, you can visit my page at http://firstgiving.com/sarahound to make a donation. No amount is too small and all proceeds will go to helping animals in need.

I will be posting videos of the event over the next week - so keep your eyes opened for that.

Thank you for your support and most of all, your friendship.

Love you all!! :)

Day 25 - A walk

Today, I went for a long walk that pooped me out. When we got back home, I got a big drink of water and went to sleep on the couch.

When I woke up, I played tug-of-war with new mom for a bit. She was determined to play and wouldn't leave me alone. I've never met a human who was obsessed with tug like she is. I think she may be a dog in a human body.

Well - thats it for tonight. Will blog more later.

See ya!

Day 24 - The guests

Mom and pop had some friends over and as usual, the friends loved me! I got to show off my mad hunter skillz. Mom gave the human visitors one of my toys and had them hide it anywhere the wanted. They chose some pretty hard spaces, but I found my toys in a matter of minutes. They were really impressed and said I was smart. I already know I'm smart but its nice to hear other people say it.

The humans ate a yummy carne asada meal. I know it was yummy because all I had to do was sit at their feet and look up at them and they'd give me some!

Those humans were so ez to train. I wish my humans were that ez to train. (New-mom tells people that she's trained me but we all know better. I just play along. I have her wrapped around my little paw. She's the one who's trained!) They can be difficult sometimes. If I look at my humans, they sometimes don't give me anything! Pop usually does but not new-mom. That's the easiest thing to train humans to do but she just doesn't get it. Geeze! Oh well - she's my human and I still love her!

I didn't get to go for my walk yesterday but I got to play with lots of toys, hunt and eat carne asada instead. Yum yum!

Day 23 - The Kong

Today, new mom and pop were cleaning the house again. That always means that someone is about to come over, but no one came over. Maybe the someone is coming over tomorrow instead.

Since they spent so much time cleaning, I spent a lot of the day sleeping. And when I wasn't sleeping, I was whining for attention. Its so tough to be a neglected hound dog. :(

Knowing that my walk is just a few days away, I was determined to get some form of training in, even if the humans were too busy to play with me. When the female let me outside, I decided to lay down and wait on the patio until the nemesis of choice came to me. And it did. Or I should say THEY did.

I cant believe that I hadn't even seen them coming. It was a surprise attack! I heard a strange noise right about my head, and when I got up, my intuition proved to be right. I was in a heated battle with 3 flies!

I jumped at them and barked at them. I stood on my hind legs and tried to bite them! New mom watched this whole thing, but she never came to help. She must have been afraid. Her fear gave me the courageous edge I needed to stand up to the 3 flies as I began to tire. I had to protect my home and my family from the invasion. In my last attempt to scare them off, I lunged at the commander fly and ate him! The other flies were scared and took off. I told them "Woof - WOOF WOOF WOOF!!!!" as they left. I could tell they were scared cause they weren't flying straight and were running into things.

I had finally beaten the flies!!!

To reward my courage and amazing feat, the female human gave me a very special Kong. It was stuffed with peanut-butter coated kibble and chicken! It was one of the best stuffed kongs I've had in a long time, and in a strange way, I owe it to the flies.

Day 22 - Facebook Friends

Not much happened today. Pop and I played a lot and I went for a long walk and oh yeah! I reached 600 friends on facebook too! I thought I should do something special to mark that event, so I put up a video that is exclusive ONLY to my Facebook friends!

If you'd like to add me as a friend and watch my video, then go to

See you there!

Day 20 - My Athletic Physical

Today was such a looooooooooooong day!

It started off good. Pop and new-mom were gettin' ready like they usually do and when they came downstairs, they got my harness and leashed me up. I was really excited cause I thought we were going somewhere cool.

They took me to Petsmart and walked me all the way to the back where the Banfield offices are. I like going to Banfield cause I really like my doctor and his assistants. They're always really nice to me, and pet me just the right way. They always tell me I'm a good dog and give me lots of treats. I like going to the vet....

Except for today. Today was different.

Pop and new-mom not only took me to the vet, but they left me there! The doctor gave me shots called 'vacks in nations'. I don't know what a vack is , but I think my body was the nation cause they kept shootin' me up. They stuck a long stick and a short stick in my butt too. I didn't like that so I cried. But it wouldn't stop. Well, it stopped eventually but it felt like a long time. They did other stuff to me too, like put this stuff in my eyes to numb them and then tapped them with a small plastic hammer-thingy. It was the worst visit I've ever had.

When new-mom and pop finally picked me up 5 hours later, I was exhausted. I had been in a kennel most of the day and couldn't wait to get home. I heard my doctor say that he was impressed with me and I was the healthiest he'd ever seen me. But then he also told them I should get my teeth scraped and clean too. Grrr....why couldn't he keep that information to himself? I don't want my teeth scraped and clean. I bet they'll find a reason to put a stick up my butt for that too!

Oh and the reason pop and new-mom took me to the vet was to make sure I was ready for my big walk in 10 days. I don't know why they needed to take me to the vet for that. They coulda just asked me. Weird humans.

As if that's not bad enough, new-mom went to go visit those other dogs again. She came back with their hair and scent all over her. Oh well - I'm almost too tired to care.

I'm off too bed. Like I said, it's been a loooooong day!

G'nite.

Day 20 - Shopping at Chino Hills

The humans haven't taken me walking in two days (Can you believe that?!) so today, they took me some place extra special. I loved walking around that place. There were so many good aromas. I got to smell flowers, trees, plants, food, drinks, people......my senses were on overload, but in a good way.

I wish the humans would take me to more places like this! I just wish I could have been off leash so I could check out everything - especially the stores! I really wanted to go inside the stores but they wouldn't let me. :(

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Day 19 - 11 days left!

Wow - can you believe it? Only 11 days left til my walk-a-thon!

There isn't much that happened today. We didn't even train. The humans had a friend over so they spent most of their time catering to her instead of me. The friend loved me though and kept petting me and telling me how cute I am. :)

We didn't exercise or go for a walk today. Maybe I can use this to make the humans feel bad and convince them to take me someplace fun to make up for it.

Sunday, May 9, 2010

Day 18 - Nothing important happened today

No walk, not much training and I slept most of the day. On a lighter note, the humans did 'cheat' on my diet and gave me a couple of chips. :D

Saturday, May 8, 2010

Day 17 - I'm STARVING

Pop and new mom have done it. They've put me on that stinkin' diet! I hate it. My portions are so much smaller now and I didn't get any hamburger or good stuff. My meals were:

  • Kibble and cheese (breakfast)
  • Half a meaty bone (so-called 'snack')
  • Kibble and cheese (lunch)
  • Small dentastik thingy (for small dogs and I'm a BIG dog!)
  • The other half of the meaty bone (again, so-called snack)
  • Kibble and chicken (dinner)
  • Cheese (for games and training
I'm starving! That's hardly anything! Where's the fish? The roast beef? The stewed carrots and mashed potatoes? They're not on my plate - that's for sure! And why was I only given one meaty bone? My quota is two a day. I didn't even get a chicken jerky thing today. Oh, and if that's not bad enough - they made me go on two walks today. TWO! On an almost empty tummy! (Well - it wasn't almost empty but it wasn't as full as it coulda been.)

This is torture! I will wither away at this point. Someone should call animal control on these people. This is cruel and unusual punishment. Don't they know I need to store up energy for my big walk soon????

The lack of food is making me light headed. I barely have enough energy to finish up this blog. I'm going to bed.

Day 16 - My Almost Hunger Strike

Pop and New Mom have started me on my diet today. New Mom started her diet too. She's even got a note pad on the fridge where she writes down everything I eat. She and pop decided to do this when they realized they accidentally fed me to chicken dinners on the same night. I think she should put a note pad on the fridge and write down everything she eats and see how she likes it!

I don't like this new diet, even if they still give me good stuff like hamburger, turkey and cheese. Nope. I won't stand for it. I ain't gonna budge.....

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Day 15 - Sara vs. The New Harness

I got a new harness today. I don't think I like it. New mom says I need to get used to it. She says the other one is too big cause I've lost weight. I think she got it for me so I can have a new harness when I go to the dog walk for IVHS.

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Day 14 - Something's up

Pop surprised me with a morning walk. It was nice to get out of the house but I really wasn't up for it. I prefer walks in the evening. Ya know how humans have the expression "I haven't had my morning cup of coffee yet"? In dogese we say, "I didn't even sniff my morning dump yet." My morning walk at 9:30 was just to doggone early for me.

It was hot today. I panted most of the day. I couldn't get very cool. Pop went to the store and brought back those things that spin really fast and blow wind in your face. Kinda like hangin your head out of the car window, only without the houses, trees, dogs and other cars going by at really fast speeds.

So, the female human is up to something. She packed together a bag and when I wasn't looking she put some of my dog treats in it. I don't like those treats very much, but they're still mine! Before she left, she gave me a nice dinner. She must have felt guilty about sneaking off somewhere with my treats.

When she was gone, pop asked me "Are you hungry hound dog?" He wasn't around when the female fed me, so I just looked up at him with my big brown eyes and I had him eating out of my paw. He fed me a nice dinner - so I ended up getting two chicken dinners tonight!

I heard pop saying I was gaining weight and they were gonna limit my treats again. Good thing I got that second chicken dinner out of 'em before my diet starts!

I'm a sneaky hound!

So, when the female came home, I ran up to greet her, but my nose stopped me dead in my tracks. Before I pounced her, I sniffed her shoes....then her pants...then her hands and shirt. I couldn't believe it.

I never would have suspected....

SHE HAD BEEN WITH ANOTHER DOG!!!!

And its not like she had just ran into another dog. Oh no, she had planned on meeting up with him! Why else would she have packed my MY treats and taken them with her?! It didn't smell like any mutt I knew. There must be a reason she's keeping this secret from me.

It's a good thing I'm a tracking dog, otherwise this might have slipped right under my nose.

I'll try to find out what I can, but in the mean time, if any of you hear anything, please let me know. I'm really curious as to what this sneaky female is up too.

Day 13 - Lots of Play

Too tired to blog because I played hard today, wrestled dad and went for a long walk. My front paw is just fine now. Yay!

I had a huge dinner with left over roast beef, potatoes and carrots. New mom and pop said that today was the last day it was good, and they didn't want to throw it out. So, they loaded me up and I didn't even have any kibble. It was sooo yummy!

Anyway, here's a small vid of my wrestling session with dad. He tried to get away from me a few times, but I was tough!!!

Day 12 - Feeling Kinda Off

This journal entry is late. Shoulda been yesterday's. I haven't been feeling well and have been sleeping most of the day. My humans are concerned about me cause I've been tripping a lot over my front right leg. I don't know what's wrong with it. Probably just a sprang or something. If it's not better within a couple days, they'll take me to visit my favorite vet.

In the meantime, I need to take it easy. I tried to play hide and seek (aka: Kill the Penguin) and help the female human record a video tutorial for Amazing Mutts, but I just wasn't feelin' it. The humans could tell too.

I hope this doesn't set me back on my dogwalk. It's for charity, you know. And lots of people are counting on me to be there.

I'll try to type more later tonight.

Day 11

Today was a lazy day.

The female human didn't feel good so she never got around to dancing with me or doing any tricks with me. Pop was upstairs most of the time. He was puttin' little boxes in big boxes and then put stickers on them. He called this Eway or was it ebay....i dunno, it was something like that....

I think new mom and pop musta felt bad about not doing much with me today, so they treated me to a nice, warm homecooked roast beef with skinless potatoes and carrots for dinner.

IT WAS GOOD!

Cooked carrots is one of my favorite foods. I like it a more than roast beef, chicken and almost as much as CHEESE!!!

Day 10 - The New Park

I was laying on the couch asleep when a pleasant aroma filled my nostrils. The heavenly scent was enough to wake me up, and encouraged me to go into the kitchen to check things out. As I made my way over there, I saw the female human taking things out of the fridge and cooking something on the stove. I heard dad say a new word 'chorizo' and I think they had it with eggs.

It smelled so good! I patiently waited for some of my own, but it never came. "That's odd" I thought to myself "They always share food with me. Maybe they forgot." I walked up to pop cause he's a big softy and always gives me food. I smiled at him, gave him my paw, tilted my head to the side, but all I heard was "What a cute hound dog! Look at how cute you are." But none of this chorizo stuff ever made it to my plate. Sheesh! The female human said something about it not being good for me which I don't get. If its not good for me, how can it be good for them? Humans can be so weird.

Later on in the day, dad went to the store so Nicole, the female human, put on some music and started teaching me some dance moves. It was fun cause I got lots of chicken. I'll do anything for chicken!

Four o'clock rolled around and the female filled up my water bottle and pop put on my harness. I knew we weren't going for a walk cause they brought a bag and babywipes with them (don't ask). They hurled me into the car and took me to a brand new dog park! It was the largest dog park I'd ever seen! A lot of the dogs didn't seem to like me at first, but then they wouldn't leave me alone. I felt a bit crowded. This must be what Lassie feels like whenever she goes to a dog park too. New-mom and pop took some vids and posted them on youtube. Feel free to watch and enjoy.

I'm off for a nap now. It's been a very long day!

Friday, April 30, 2010

Day 9 - Wrestling

Today was a good day. I woke up this morning but didn't have much of an appetite. The female human tried to get me to eat my kibble by adding cheese and milkbones to it. I just wasn't in the mood for kibble so I went straight for the cheese and milkbones. I don't think she was very happy about that but I didn't mind.

Me and the humans went for a nice walk in the evening, and when we got home I was still really excited! I was walking through the living room, stopped in my tracks and started barking. I was in a hyper mood.

Usually after my long walks, I come home exhausted. Tonight was just the opposite. I was full of energy. As my pop took off my harness and got down on the floor to play with me, we wrestled for at least 3 minutes. I got really tough with him. I charged him, jumped on him and barked at him til he gave me tummy rubs! It was lots of fun!

Now comes my favorite part of the evening, where I calm down, laying in front of the patio screen door, as the cool evening wind brushes against my fur to cool me down. I love to go for nightly walks. They help me to digest my dinner.

All this training has helped my endurance level to go up as my walks get farther and farther. I love it!

Next on the agenda, full body massage to complete the evening.

I'm not spoiled, am I?

It was a good day. :)

Day 8 - *Yawn*

Not much to report today. I was tired, went for a short walk, and took lots of naps. Today really was my rest day.

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Day 7 - Rest in the Morning; Play at Night

Today I was outside a most of the morning in the cool breeze. I was trying to get the heat of the concrete on my belly while I laid outside on the patio napping. In the late afternoon, I finally woke up and my pop took me on a half mile walk.

When we got home, the female human started working with me again. She's really confusing! Remember how yesterday I told you dogs about the left and right thing? So, I guess the left and right are the same, cause I get treats for both. She'll point to a cone and say left, but then she'll point to another cone and say right. Maybe she named the cones left and right. She's nuts. All in all, five minutes later, I had a stick of cheese in my belly.

I got a bonus car ride through the del taco drive in too. I didn't get anything. I think dad wanted too but the female human is strict about my diet. No chicken cheddar quesadilla for me tonight. :(

When they were done eating, I got a chance to play my favorite game - PENGUIN!!! He's my stuffed toy nemesis. I think they want me to kill him because they're always putting food around his neck and hiding him for me to find. They call this weird tradition Hide and Seek. I call it My 8 o'clock snack!

Now I'm about to settle down on my bed and go to sleep. I'm next to all of my toys and .....zzzzz.....

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Day 6 - Target Training

My humans were gone most of the day today but the female human took me for a short walk when they got home. We didn't walk much (maybe 1/4 a mile) because it was getting windy outside. When we got back home, she decided to teach me something new. She called it Target Training, which is a harder version of Touch.

On 'Touch' I just touch her hand or whatever she's holding in her hand with my nose or paw. With Target Training, I'm learning to touch whatever she points at which is at a further distance away. She started off with my toys and some cones at first and moved on to walls and random objects in the house. I was running around all over the place.

I wasn't very confident with this new exercise at first but she said I was catching on to it really fast and kept calling me a good dog. I like being called a good dog!

She also started saying "Left" or "Right" towards the end of training. I don't know what it means yet but I think it must be a new trick or game or something. At first I thought left and rights might be new treats but she kept dishing out those same old chunks of cheese at me.

She always has something up her sleeve and has a sneaky way of teaching me stuff. That's okay though. Today I got to exercise my brain and my body.

Tomorrow will probably be my rest day (at least, that's what the humans think)!

Monday, April 26, 2010

Day 5 - Cat Patrol

Today there was an unexpected turn of events. What was supposed to be a nice, leisurely stroll around the neighborhood turned into a night of kitty hell. In one walk, we passed by 9 different cats in less than a mile! Grr....!!!

Cats don't scare me but the spell they have over my humans is unnerving. Perhaps the full moon had something to do with this?

In the following video you will see how the humans not only ignored the cat (well, mostly) but they held me back from annihilating it!! What is wrong with these people?? Don't they know cats are evil???

Well except for the one gray and white one that hangs out with me in my backyard, but other than that, they're all evil!!!

As you can see, in the end, I accepted my temporary defeat and moved on. Had these wicked humans not had this blasted body cast around me, there would have been no kitty left to speak of! This ordeal had such a physical and mental strain on me that I was unable to clear my head to continue training. But tomorrow....tomorrow I will be ready for them!

To the cats out there I say BRING IT!!!

Sunday, April 25, 2010

Day 4 - Grasshopper Madness

I hate the grasshopper! He's always one paw ahead of me. Its like he somehow nose my moves better than I do! Grasshopper is a worthy adversary and was part of my training for Day 4.

One day grasshopper, I will stop you! You can jump but you can't hide forever!

Day 3 - Reflecting on Yesterday

I was able to get some training in yesterday after all.

I'm feeling pooped out today though....

I might skip on today's training and nap instead.

Friday, April 23, 2010

Day 2

Today is the second day of training. I had my day all mapped out. I was going to start with a stroll around the neighborhood, followed by a 20 minute session of following the humans around to smell their butts, followed by 10 minutes of hunting grasshoppers. All was going well until the male human said something about a car ride.

He hauled me into the backseat and we took off. I was delighted when we stopped at the spaw and he requested the usual. I was lead into my private quarters for some 'me' time while the servants prepped my bath. After 3 hours of soaking, massaging, nail trimming, teeth brushing, ear cleaning and hair trimming, it was time to go home. I've slept most of the day and have let out a few yawns while pawing this blog.

Exercise will have to wait til tomorrow.

Training Begins

In 30 days from today's date, I will be walking for charity.

Today, training begins.

My humans took me for a walk this morning to beat the rain. Usually, we walk at night but today was different. They had planned on taking me down the street and back, but I had other intentions.

As we got to the end of my street, I bolted around the corner and the female human almost lost her grip. She began jogging alongside me to keep up with my massive speed. By the time I reached 1/2 a mile, my energy began to relinquish.

The male human tried to give me water, but I refused. The only thing I could think of was completing the track. With my heart set on the prize, and my eyes focused on the path before me, I continued to press on.

I almost made it, until I was distracted by a friendly neighbor who came up to tell me how cute I am. As she pet me, I felt my muscles begin to melt. I had lost my focused, I sat down and enjoyed the amature massage. I began to fall asleep but then, the faces of homeless, desperate animals crossed through my mind, and I stood up knowing that I had to continue my journey again.

I made it home, and enjoyed my well deserved bowl of water.

Tonight, I shall continue my exercise session as I hunt the penguin doll in the living room. It will be tough, but in the end, it'll be worth it!

The Basset Hound Anthem

The Basset Hound Anthem
By Sara Hound

I love to play
And wag my tail
Even when I run
I'm as fast as a snail

I have huge ears
And a great long nose
Even when I'm truthful
I'm like Pinocchio

I'm a big dog
On real short legs
You can't give in
When I start to beg
Even when I'm fine
I wear a great big frown
With my large wide eyes
Cause I'm a basset hound

If you're lost
Don't know where you went
Call me in
I'll pick up your scent

I'll get you home
Safe and sound
I do this all for fun
Cause I'm a basset hound

I'm a big dog
On real short legs
You can't give in
When I start to beg
Even when I'm fine
I wear a great big frown
With my large wide eyes
Cause I'm a basset hound

I love to chase cats
Crickets and bunnies
But I never catch up
So I look kinda funny
I'll be your best friend
Cheer you up when your down
Cause absolutely everybody
Loves a basset hound!

My Mild Agility Course

My new mom came up with this one a few days ago. I love it! She decided to make a video of it so we can show other pups how to do this too. It's really easy. The best part of all is that I'm the star!
