Day 9 - Wrestling

Today was a good day. I woke up this morning but didn't have much of an appetite. The female human tried to get me to eat my kibble by adding cheese and milkbones to it. I just wasn't in the mood for kibble so I went straight for the cheese and milkbones. I don't think she was very happy about that but I didn't mind.

Me and the humans went for a nice walk in the evening, and when we got home I was still really excited! I was walking through the living room, stopped in my tracks and started barking. I was in a hyper mood.

Usually after my long walks, I come home exhausted. Tonight was just the opposite. I was full of energy. As my pop took off my harness and got down on the floor to play with me, we wrestled for at least 3 minutes. I got really tough with him. I charged him, jumped on him and barked at him til he gave me tummy rubs! It was lots of fun!

Now comes my favorite part of the evening, where I calm down, laying in front of the patio screen door, as the cool evening wind brushes against my fur to cool me down. I love to go for nightly walks. They help me to digest my dinner.

All this training has helped my endurance level to go up as my walks get farther and farther. I love it!

Next on the agenda, full body massage to complete the evening.

I'm not spoiled, am I?

It was a good day. :)

Day 8 - *Yawn*

Not much to report today. I was tired, went for a short walk, and took lots of naps. Today really was my rest day.

Day 7 - Rest in the Morning; Play at Night

Today I was outside a most of the morning in the cool breeze. I was trying to get the heat of the concrete on my belly while I laid outside on the patio napping. In the late afternoon, I finally woke up and my pop took me on a half mile walk.

When we got home, the female human started working with me again. She's really confusing! Remember how yesterday I told you dogs about the left and right thing? So, I guess the left and right are the same, cause I get treats for both. She'll point to a cone and say left, but then she'll point to another cone and say right. Maybe she named the cones left and right. She's nuts. All in all, five minutes later, I had a stick of cheese in my belly.

I got a bonus car ride through the del taco drive in too. I didn't get anything. I think dad wanted too but the female human is strict about my diet. No chicken cheddar quesadilla for me tonight. :(

When they were done eating, I got a chance to play my favorite game - PENGUIN!!! He's my stuffed toy nemesis. I think they want me to kill him because they're always putting food around his neck and hiding him for me to find. They call this weird tradition Hide and Seek. I call it My 8 o'clock snack!

Now I'm about to settle down on my bed and go to sleep. I'm next to all of my toys and .....zzzzz.....

Day 6 - Target Training

My humans were gone most of the day today but the female human took me for a short walk when they got home. We didn't walk much (maybe 1/4 a mile) because it was getting windy outside. When we got back home, she decided to teach me something new. She called it Target Training, which is a harder version of Touch.

On 'Touch' I just touch her hand or whatever she's holding in her hand with my nose or paw. With Target Training, I'm learning to touch whatever she points at which is at a further distance away. She started off with my toys and some cones at first and moved on to walls and random objects in the house. I was running around all over the place.

I wasn't very confident with this new exercise at first but she said I was catching on to it really fast and kept calling me a good dog. I like being called a good dog!

She also started saying "Left" or "Right" towards the end of training. I don't know what it means yet but I think it must be a new trick or game or something. At first I thought left and rights might be new treats but she kept dishing out those same old chunks of cheese at me.

She always has something up her sleeve and has a sneaky way of teaching me stuff. That's okay though. Today I got to exercise my brain and my body.

Tomorrow will probably be my rest day (at least, that's what the humans think)!

Day 5 - Cat Patrol

Today there was an unexpected turn of events. What was supposed to be a nice, leisurely stroll around the neighborhood turned into a night of kitty hell. In one walk, we passed by 9 different cats in less than a mile! Grr....!!!

Cats don't scare me but the spell they have over my humans is unnerving. Perhaps the full moon had something to do with this?

In the following video you will see how the humans not only ignored the cat (well, mostly) but they held me back from annihilating it!! What is wrong with these people?? Don't they know cats are evil???

Well except for the one gray and white one that hangs out with me in my backyard, but other than that, they're all evil!!!

As you can see, in the end, I accepted my temporary defeat and moved on. Had these wicked humans not had this blasted body cast around me, there would have been no kitty left to speak of! This ordeal had such a physical and mental strain on me that I was unable to clear my head to continue training. But tomorrow....tomorrow I will be ready for them!

To the cats out there I say BRING IT!!!

Day 4 - Grasshopper Madness

I hate the grasshopper! He's always one paw ahead of me. Its like he somehow nose my moves better than I do! Grasshopper is a worthy adversary and was part of my training for Day 4.

One day grasshopper, I will stop you! You can jump but you can't hide forever!

Day 3 - Reflecting on Yesterday

I was able to get some training in yesterday after all.

I'm feeling pooped out today though....

I might skip on today's training and nap instead.

Day 2

Today is the second day of training. I had my day all mapped out. I was going to start with a stroll around the neighborhood, followed by a 20 minute session of following the humans around to smell their butts, followed by 10 minutes of hunting grasshoppers. All was going well until the male human said something about a car ride.

He hauled me into the backseat and we took off. I was delighted when we stopped at the spaw and he requested the usual. I was lead into my private quarters for some 'me' time while the servants prepped my bath. After 3 hours of soaking, massaging, nail trimming, teeth brushing, ear cleaning and hair trimming, it was time to go home. I've slept most of the day and have let out a few yawns while pawing this blog.

Exercise will have to wait til tomorrow.

Training Begins

In 30 days from today's date, I will be walking for charity.

Today, training begins.

My humans took me for a walk this morning to beat the rain. Usually, we walk at night but today was different. They had planned on taking me down the street and back, but I had other intentions.

As we got to the end of my street, I bolted around the corner and the female human almost lost her grip. She began jogging alongside me to keep up with my massive speed. By the time I reached 1/2 a mile, my energy began to relinquish.

The male human tried to give me water, but I refused. The only thing I could think of was completing the track. With my heart set on the prize, and my eyes focused on the path before me, I continued to press on.

I almost made it, until I was distracted by a friendly neighbor who came up to tell me how cute I am. As she pet me, I felt my muscles begin to melt. I had lost my focused, I sat down and enjoyed the amature massage. I began to fall asleep but then, the faces of homeless, desperate animals crossed through my mind, and I stood up knowing that I had to continue my journey again.

I made it home, and enjoyed my well deserved bowl of water.

Tonight, I shall continue my exercise session as I hunt the penguin doll in the living room. It will be tough, but in the end, it'll be worth it!

The Basset Hound Anthem

The Basset Hound Anthem
By Sara Hound

I love to play
And wag my tail
Even when I run
I'm as fast as a snail

I have huge ears
And a great long nose
Even when I'm truthful
I'm like Pinocchio

I'm a big dog
On real short legs
You can't give in
When I start to beg
Even when I'm fine
I wear a great big frown
With my large wide eyes
Cause I'm a basset hound

If you're lost
Don't know where you went
Call me in
I'll pick up your scent

I'll get you home
Safe and sound
I do this all for fun
Cause I'm a basset hound

I'm a big dog
On real short legs
You can't give in
When I start to beg
Even when I'm fine
I wear a great big frown
With my large wide eyes
Cause I'm a basset hound

I love to chase cats
Crickets and bunnies
But I never catch up
So I look kinda funny
I'll be your best friend
Cheer you up when your down
Cause absolutely everybody
Loves a basset hound!

My Mild Agility Course

My new mom came up with this one a few days ago. I love it! She decided to make a video of it so we can show other pups how to do this too. It's really easy. The best part of all is that I'm the star!
